MEMORIES - Updated Dec. 18, 2009: Added to Memories 4, 10/11, 18/19

Have a Memory? Send it to us!

MEMORY 1: Fince or Fence? The language/cultural things

- The fan's accent was charming and musical, but that word was completely indecipherable to the American ear. I'll never forget the confused look on JS's face when he kept saying 'fince?'. The incident reminded me how wonderful it was not only to have other fans together, but how Lancer struck a chord around the world and we were here, in one spot, experiencing the love together!

- Do you drink pop, soda, soft drink, or fizz???  Be prepared to explain yourself or ask for an explanation. No one will mind and it's actually proved, over the years, to be hilarious at times. TIP – If an Aussie tells you she wants to “shout tea”... take her up on it. She's going to buy you dinner!

- Tim Tam" anyone?? Perhaps a Tim Tam Slam with Tequila??

MEMORY 2: How will the 2010 Memphis Con be different than past Cons?

- How the heck can you have a memory of something that hasn't happened yet?

MEMORY 3: How will the 2010 Memphis Con be the same as past Cons?**

- I've lived in L.A. my whole life, but saw parts of it I'd never seen before because of the curiosity of others! It was the same in S.D. and Boston. The places we saw  were so much fun because we were together. It's like having new eyes and a new perspective. And no nagging children asking to go home or to say they are "booooored!".

- Fun and meeting up. Getting an aching jaw from laughing!

MEMORY 4: Knowing/finding each other.

- I see a surfboard bag at the terminal and wonder who the heck thinks they're going to surf in the Atlantic Ocean in October! Then this person jumps off the bus wearing a blue shirt with the Lancer "L" embroidered on it. Aha! It's AJ and "the boys" are in the bag!

- Strangely, past experience has had many of us just “knowing” when we passed each other!

- Nametags really helped! That, and matching t-shirts.

- In 2005, having never before met, through email two ladies briefly described themselves, but in the grand childhood tradition of playing cowboys and Indians, one claimed that she was to be referred to as "Johnny" for that convention – the other was required to then become "Scott."  Checking in at the LA hotel, the line was long - but two peculiar females kept staring at each other.  Finally, one ventured, "Scott?"  The other returned, "Johnny?"  Giggles and hugs ensued - and a lobby full of strangers was introduced to the unique experience that is a "Lancer Convention."

MEMORY 5: Getting around for sightseeing.

- I had Mapquest maps printed out for the places I wanted to go. Yes, I have been accused of being A/R!

- When the navigator can't read a map, it gets reeeeeal interesting!

- It took us 2 hours to go 12 miles to the Getty Museum in L.A. traffic. Once there, as we wound our way down the undergroud parking in our rental van, we noticed the ceiling got lower. We squeezed into a spot with an inch or so to spare, and when we left, we all had to get in the van to make it low enough to clear the ceiling!

MEMORY 6: The "Party Room"?

- The best party room ever was the 2nd Con in L.A. It was a two room suite with doors that opened to the pool an a patio. The central room was HUGE with lots of overstuffed furniture, a fake fireplace with fake flames, TV (of course), a bar and comfy floors. We watched episodes until we were blind! We all found a spot and vegged in comfort. It was great!

MEMORY 7: Rental Vehicles

- In Boston, we were picked up by Enterprise to go get our rental car.  When he randomly assigned us a Lancer we all laughed uproariously!  Then we had to explain...

- We took the suggested car rental shuttle from the hotel to get our car. Two of us went so we could be sure to memorize the route back to the hotel. After an hour of riding around in the shuttle memorizing street names, I noticed that the street name looked familiar. "Hey, isn't our hotel on Century Blvd.?" "Yep," my partner said. "The hotel's right there." THe rental company was 200 feet down the street! We didn't get lost returning the car.

MEMORY 8: AJ's Driving - Myth or Reality?

- Lies. All lies told by lying liars who lie.

- I have video.

- She rides the same way.She answered the mobile phone while 'riding' off into the distance with the Lone Ranger at the Autry Museum. And yes, it's on tape!

MEMORY 9: Drinkin' & Smokin'

- I learned all about tequila! Rub the lime on your hand – sprinkle with salt – etc.  AJ taught me, so she has to reexplain it!  She got me hooked on the “good” stuff, so I don’t swig anymore – I sip! The more common and cheaper brands are acceptable to use with limes and salt and margarita mix – and can be “licked off the floor for all I care” according to our most discriminating Tequila snob!  If she catches you using one of the better brands in a margarita, she WILL cut your fingers off . . . well, figuratively.

- Peanut M&M’s go wonderfully with Tequila! Go to www.itequila.org for lots of Tequila info.

- I remember toasting Johnny with some good stuff!

- I don't remember anyone smoking in the group. If they did, it was out of sight.

MEMORIES 10 & 11: Group touring. Or not.

- There were approximately a dozen of us for lunch in Boston. We were spread out over one of the long communal tables. There was a lot of giggling going on. We wondered what the heck was going on. It turns out (you can read the results at Lancer Fan Fiction) that they were giving AJ advice on how to write her next Tequila story. Tequila Beans was the result.

- We made homemade ice cream and it's more fun if everybody pitches in. We started a sing along as we cranked, staring with I've Been Working on the Railroad and went on through On Top of Old Smoky and Sixteen Tons and I don't know what else. The attendee now known as Munchkin/Leprechaun/Houdini (pick one!) decided to keep the ice creame freezer from moving around by standing on it and leaning against the church. When we got to the choruses (those of us who could stop laughing long enough to sing) she was literally howing at the moon.

- In L.A., I happened to have a van and wound up with a full load everywhere I went. It was great fun, and a perfect touring size when we were out on foot.

- Our hastily put together group bonded tremendously. I did notice that the groups went different places, but everyone ended up doing or seeing what they wanted. There was a 1-person "group" in L.A. that was all over the place by her bad self! There were two's and three's . .  all sizes. It just happens!

- The Buffy/Angel street-set tours where Johnny went to the Hellmouth with us!

MEMORY 12: The Boys.

- "The Boys" have taught me a lot about human nature. People are such a riot! Reminds me of a saying an old cowboy told me once: "Folks is folks." Yup! And they are a curious lot, too!

MEMORIES 14 & 21: What to bring/What to wear.

- A camera. Seriously.

- A great alibi for when someone from Down Under gets you on video doing really stupid things. I hope to God she never figures out Youtube.

MEMORIES 15, 16 & 17: Gift bags, postcard & gift exchanges.

- The postcard idea was stellar. Inexpensive, easy to pack and no sizes to worry about. And, they can be autographed on the backside!

-The goodies inside the gift bags were always so creative. I especially remember the L charm and zines!

MEMORY 18 & 19: Lancer DVD viewings & tests.

- Three certain ladies were SO caught up in an episode of Lancer they had running in the DVD player one time that they didn't know ANYBODY left the room until EVERYBODY was gone! !

- Carrie required that we throw popcorn at the screen when viewing LDOTS. I wanted to throw projectile vomit! All that so I could sign Johnny's butt! *sigh*. Yes. It was worth it. At least I wasn't alone in my misery, ha ha!

- At home, I have to watch Lancer episodes on the sly and by myself to avoid ridicule and rolling eyes. NOTHING IS BETTER THAN WATCHING THEM WITH OTHER FANS! NOTHING!

MEMORY 20: Scott Girls

JAMES STACY: Not a question, but worthy of a section!

- What struck me most about him was his voice. It was a joy to just sit and listen to him. He could read the dictionary out loud and I would be enthralled.

- He was so gracious. He made conversation with EVERY lady as she introduced herself at the brunch!
